THE HAPPENING
When I was in San Francisco waiting for Kristen to get out of her conference, I ventured into the city and decided to watch a movie at one of their very large multiplex theater. I honestly was expecting to pay an arm and a leg for tickets cause everything else in the city required collateral but I was surprised that this was the best deal that I had all week. If you went before noon on any day the admission price for an adult dropped from $10.50 to $6 – a bargain if you have the time.
Anyways, I love going to the movies by myself and in the mornings as this usually guarantees me that I will have plenty of room to sprawl out and I don’t have to talk to anybody. I love to just concentrate on the movie in my own relaxing way.
So on this particular day, I decided to watch M. Night Shyamalan’s newest movie “The Happening” starring Marky Mark. I had a whole row to myself; the seats were the very comfortable loveseat type with the ability to recline; it had WiFi so I busted out my laptop during the previews to check email – it was perfect … up until the movie started.
Here are my condensed thoughts on the movie – I was disappointed. The only thing good about this movie that was cool was that I recognized some of the Philadelphia scenes and Three Mile Island made a cameo but other than that … it sucked. The plot sucked, the acting sucked, the movie sucked. I wanted my money back.
It seemed to me that this movie was Shyamalan’s way of expressing his concern over the state of the environment. We were supposed to be scared of the plants and trees in this movie? Screw that!
I give this movie a C- and only because the characters were on their way to Harrisburg.
WE ARE MARSHALL
We decided to watch this DVD last Sunday. I am not a big fan of movies that revolve around some sort of tragedy such as a plane crash because I really don’t want to know or even simulate what it must be like during those last seconds or minutes before impending doom.
So needless to say I was a little anxious prior to the movie.
Fortunately for me, they spend very little time on the actual crash and more time on the community and school during the event and it’s aftermath. It’s a very good sports movie that has it’s highs and lows. I even choked up a bit during a scene where the student body, who was petitioning the board to keep the football program at Marshall, began chanting “we are Marshall.” It was a moving scene.
The only drawback that I found a little annoying Matthew McConaughey at the very beginning of the movie – and I guess it wasn’t so much him as it was his character, but I got over it. It’s no “Rudy” or “Field of Dreams,” but it’s good.
I give it a B+.
27 DRESSES
I’ll get to the short of this. It’s a cute chick flick with a plot that only a girl or gay wedding planner can really appreciate. The only thing that made this movie half bearable was that Katherine Heigl is attractive, other than that, I felt gay for watching it.
The plot is simple, girl is always the brides maid and never the bride. The one thing that bothered me was that Katherine’s character spends tons of money on other people’s weddings and she is an assistant to some CEO in NYC … how much fricken money can she possibly make??? The movie also reconfirmed the fact that Ed Burns can’t act.
I give this movie a C+.
